Summary: The next time Sam sees his brother, almost four years down the road, Dean asks him if he would've picked up the phone.
Dean calls him exactly once, about a month after Sam's classes start. "How you doing?" he asks, nonchalant, and Sam can hear Led Zeppelin playing in the background, the volume just low enough for them to be able to talk. Too loud for Sam, too low for Dean. It used to drive Sam crazy.
Sam looks away from his notes. "Fine," he says. For some reason, he's looking at the floor.
"There's no need to tell me everything all at once, Sammy," Dean says after a moment.
"It's Sam," he says and grits his teeth.
Dean ignores that. All's as usual, then. "You doing good, there?"
"Yeah," says Sam. There's a paper he needs to hand in tomorrow, but he still has time. He'll make it. "I am."
"Good. That's good."
"Yeah," Sam agrees, tensing and loosening his muscles, seemingly at the same time.
Dean doesn't say anything more after that. Neither does Sam, when he realizes nothing is coming. Christ. He wishes he could hang up, but at the same time he can't bring himself to do that.
Dean then clears his throat. "Well, I'll catch you later, all right?"
Sam says, "Yeah."
He's surprised to hear Dean chuckle. "Can you say anything other than 'yeah'?"
Sam smiles and lets go of the phone, keeping it in place with his shoulder. "Yup."
"Take care, Sammy."
"You too, Dean," he says after biting the inside of his cheek. "Talk to you some other time."
They hang up. Sam does have homework to finish, after all.
The next time he sees his brother, almost four years down the road, Dean asks him, if I would've called you, would you have picked up?
Sam doesn't have an answer.
